The Villanovan culture (taking its name from Villanova, a borough a few kilometres from, where the first discoveries were made, in 1853) dating back to 9th century b. C., is in fact recognised as the earliest period of the Etruscan civilisation. The archaeological discoveries of Villanova reveal that settlements took place quite suddenly in the area, where several groups of Etruscan people from the Tyrrhenian Etruria moved, attracted by the fertility of the Po valley. Bologna, then named Felsina, controlled a vast territory full of little rural settlements and became an important centre of commerce between the Tyrrhenian area and northern Italy. The vestiges of the Villanova civilisation (and of the following domination) are kept at the Archaeological Museum of Bologna. Among them, the famous and precious Askos Benacci, (from the Greek term askos = leather bottle), a vase used for storing perfumes and ointments; the vase has the shape of a bull with a big rounded belly, a long neck, big curved bull horns and a handle in the shape of a horse ridden by a knight wearing his helmet and carrying a shield on his shoulders.
